Accomodations

Guests are highly encouraged to stay in homestays. In homestays, guests will stay with local families, allowing them to experience Gurung culture firsthand. For 1,200 NRS per night, guests will enjoy:

  • Welcome chiya and Khaja
  • A traditional Nepali dinner with daal, bhat, seasonal tarkari, and chicken 
  • A morning breakfast 
    • Breakfast items vary depending on the season. Popular options include:
      • Fresh sel roti, either made from kodo or rice 
      • Taro root (Pidalu) 
      • Corn 
  • A dal-bhat-tarkari afternoon meal 

Paa

Paa is a traditional Gurung drink- one that’s made in most homes with techniques that have been perfected over the years. 

A local alcohol, Paa is usually made with one of three annas: Kodo (millet), Chamal (rice), or Jau (barley). 

In the initial process, the annas are mixed with marcha– a fermentation starter that’s made by combining indigenous herbs. This combination is left to ferment for about one month. 

Once properly fermented, the combination is placed inside a large bowl, a taulo, before it’s cooked on an open fire. Afterwards, a smaller bowl with a hole at the bottom, called tupi, is placed on top. Then, a smaller basin with water is placed on top of the tupi. 

As the fermented alcohol boils, its vapors rise, condense, and drops inside the tupi. The collected liquid is the clear paa. 

Guests can purchase homemade paa from their homestays if supply is available. However, we encourage guests to drink responsibly. Please note that homestay owners have the right to refuse serving drinks to individuals who are heavily intoxicated. 

Code of conduct

Quiet hours are observed after 11 P.M. The use of loudspeakers is discouraged during this time. Guests must also abide by the Committee’s homestay rules. 

Guests are encouraged to check in before 7 P.M, but must check out before noon.

Rules that homestay and lodge/hotel guests must abide by

  1. All guests must register their name, city, and phone number with their homestay. 
  2. Guests must not participate in activities that can negatively impact the local community.  Such activities include harassment, teasing, and hate crimes.
  3. Guests should not fight in public places or in their accommodations after being heavily intoxicated.  
  4. Guests must not use, sell, purchase, or possess illegal drugs or participate in any illegal activities. 
  5. All homestay and hotel kitchens close at 10 PM; therefore, guests must finish eating/drinking before then
  6. Playing loud music or producing loud noises is not allowed after 11 PM. 
  7. Homestay guests may not bring outside food or drinks. In case guests bring their own beer, they will be charged 100 rupees per can and 750 rupees per bottle of rum and whiskey. Guests must manage the disposal of these materials themselves.
